Two Generations of Grace Volunteers

Grace Medical Home has often been referred to as a family affair – that is especially true for the Fleming/Ivanek and Davis/Cash families.

The first father-daughter duo began their journey at Grace when Lynn Fleming Ivanek started working as Grace’s director of philanthropy eight years ago. Her father, Dr. John Fleming, is a retired physician with a passion for playing the piano. From a young age, Lynn developed the same passion for singing, and together, their music lifts spirits wherever they perform.

Lynn and John create different themes for their concerts in the Welcome Room at Grace. Recent themes have included Broadway, old classics and holiday themed music. Often times they welcome additional volunteer vocalists to join them, like Grace interns, patients and even W. Marvin Hardy III and his brother, Dr. Jim Hardy.

Their musical impact extends beyond Grace. They also play at many retirement homes, especially to aid and uplift dementia patients dealing with memory loss. Though dementia patients have a hard time remembering recent conversations, familiar tasks, and their loved ones, many times they can remember music. “Music has the ability to move you,” said Dr. Fleming. “Music and spirituality go together.”

Father-daughter duo Laurin Cash and Dr. Wilbur Davis have close family ties to the Hardys and Grace. Laurin, a Social Work Volunteer, has known Dr. Hardy since they were both in preschool. Additionally, her father, Dr. Wilbur Davis, a volunteer in our Dental Center, and has been great friends with Dr. Hardy's family as well. They have both been blessed to witness Grace’s humble beginnings and be a part of its growing community impact.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Dr. Davis has been an oral surgeon for the past 50 years. He first began volunteering by seeing Grace patients in his office followed by contributing his knowledge and expertise to help build our dental program. He also travels to places like Peru and Columbia to perform oral surgical procedures, such as operating on a cleft palate.

Laurin was first led to Grace by the guidance and support of Grace trustee, Marilyn King. She truly discovered her purpose at Grace -- a strong passion for mental health and spiritual care. Pastor Omar Cardona has also been instrumental in helping her discover her path as a member of the spiritual care team, offering prayer and support to anyone seeking spiritual guidance. At the time, Laurin's spirit was breaking amid her divorce, but her service at Grace helped her realize she needed to help others to help herself. Lauren shared, “Grace was created by God for God. The holy spirit lives in Grace and blesses every patient, staff member, and volunteer.”

Laurin's experience on the spiritual care team led her to join the social work team. She is working to become a licensed mental health counselor.

Both of these families continue to share their gifts and make a significant impact on the lives they touch at Grace. Thank you for your continued service!
